HYPE OR NOT? THE BEST WAY TO DEFINE SQUID GAME

INTRODUCTION

Well before I answer the prevalent question, I have to go a while back to when I was visiting the previable world that is social media. And I came across one question after skimming through the sea of memes, which asked "Are humans inherently savage?". It's a question that lets ponder the aspects of human nature and it's elements to it. Are humans really inherently savage selfish beings when face with adversities.

STORY

The show centers around a middle age gambling addict father named Gi-hun, struggling to pay his outrages debt from vicious loan sharks. Gi-hun on his way to the subway station home feeling tired, he meets a stranger who gives him an opportunity to get 100,000won. By playing a children's game. Gi-hun reluctantly agrees and after so many losses he actually wins and is given his reward. The stranger tells Gi-hun he can earn more with just similar children games.

Gi-hun is given a card with a number and is told he can triple his amount with Playing the same childish games. He finds himself in a strange place with a familiar regular bunch of people, with the same issues as him. He meets characters like a brute thug who takes everything by force, a sickly elderly, a struggling but naive immigrant, a refugee trying to get a better life and a childhood friend. All are playing children games to the death for billions of money.

THEMES

The themes of the show are anti-capitalism, human survival and Human empathy. This thematic subject matters are questioned well and asks whether humans are really savages beings. Emotions like greed, anger, doubt, desperation are prevalent in the show, where characters have fewer choices to make. The thematic questions most of the time are left ambiguous or unanswered, its up to the audience to decide.

HYPE OR NOT

Now the question at hand, is Squid Game just another hype show? Well really if we consider the genre in question and how it's new to a lot of audiences, then the hype is very much valid and warranted.
