Watching Kenyan films Netflix is dream come true for many storytellers in Kenya.
We have always admired Nigerian content creators, South Africa and now it's time for Kenya to shine (You know that feeling when a crush finally says yes- that’s the feeling).
Since Waridi, which I felt bound with, Vioja Mahakamani, Tausi, Makutano Junction, Vitimbi, Nairobi half life (A Kenyan film still glimmering Kenyan film Industry) multiple award winning film Supa Modo and many Kenyan films, we can discern its time to showcase our talent internationally
I still hope our films and Tv shows will one day trend as the Worlds best shows like Lacasa De Papel and The Blacklist.
Here are reasons why Kenyan's should Netflix and Chill Kenyan content.
1. Netflix will Invest more on Kenyan Content.
Once Kenyan Films start trending on Netflix, this automatically translates that WE NEED more of 254 films on the giant distribution platform. Once Netflix realizes that our content is most watched we will see them green lighting TV shows and more of Netflix Kenyan original. A win for all creatives.
2. Support New talents.
New talent hidden for a long time have come to life. This will open doors of greatness and all the best to being nominated to Oscars.
Watching Sincerely Daisy saw us realize new talents my favorite being Francis Ouma aka Faiz who played Kyalo Mistari brought the film to life.
New other talents people should recognize include The two children on Poacher.
3. Kenya Gets to the Map.
According to Rebecca Moudi from United Nation Africa Renewal website in 2013, more than 50 films are produced weekly. Thus making Nollywood the second largest film industry in the world after Bollywood.
Kenyan film on Netflix will motivate more filmmakers including Kenyan Indie Filmmakers to produce more content.
4. Art will be regarded as a career
A research I did when writing this article only 4 out of 10 entertainers are taken seriously when they introduce themselves as entertainers.
With the introduction of new curriculum, art is one of the considered things to be taught in school, a benefit 8-4-4 students did not enjoy much.
The government through the ministry of ICT Kenya Film Commission has had the efforts to support Kenyan films through funding, logistics, and partnership programs.
Kenyan films will see Stories from Kenyan culture tell the narrative of who we are, the best part being told by Kenyans themselves.
Some Kenyan films on Netflix include Poacher, Sincerely Daisy first Kenyan film to premiere on Netflix, and the most recent Disconnect.
We should support Kenyan Content not only on Netflix but in every way possible. It’s only us who can show others that what we are capable of.
